Outgoing UNZASU President Dixon Matambo praised President Hakainde Hichilema for his consistent support of students.

“Thank you is an understatement. The man has always been there for us. Each and every single time we reached out to him using the proper communications channel,” he said.

President-elect Mwanto, in his remarks to the crowd, called on all students to rally behind the president.

“I am calling for all [students] … to rally behind this president. Allow me to express my sincere gratitude for the peace that has been seen.”

UNZASU Vice President-elect Jesmiah Mwaba echoed the sentiment:

“We call you Bally, our friend, because we know that you take care of us. One thing I will say is that you are a man who walks the talk.”

Following the engagement, the President shared his reflections on the gathering.

“We were privileged this afternoon at State House to host thousands of University of Zambia students from both the Great East Road and Ridgeway campuses who came to unveil to us their newly elected students’ leadership for the 2025/2026 academic year.”

President Hichilema reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to education, describing it as “the best investment, equaliser, and inheritance.” He also outlined the government’s key priorities.

“Aside the imperative of free education, this Government is actively working to improve accommodation issues, sanitation, and also increasing the number of recipients for loans for higher education. We will not relent on our investment drive into the education sector as we believe that having an educated and skilled population is the guaranteed pathway to economic and social development.”
