President Hichilema Congratulates By-Election Victors

A press release was shared by State House today which praised the peaceful conduct of Thursday's by-elections and congratulated winners across three constituencies.

A press release shared by State House today has commended the Zambian people for conducting violence-free by-elections on 7 August 2025, as the ruling UPND secured victories in key constituencies including a historic breakthrough in Muchinga Province.

The Head of State expressed satisfaction with the peaceful campaigns across Mfuwe, Nchelenge, and Mponwe constituencies, noting that political competition focused on policy debates rather than personal attacks.

"We are pleased to observe the common respectful atmosphere that characterized the campaigns across all constituencies," President Hichilema stated in the press release. "The reports we have indicate that campaign teams from different parties campaigned side by side as fellow citizens competing in diverse areas."

The most significant victory came in Mfuwe constituency, where UPND candidate Malama Mufunelo secured 5,684 votes to claim the parliamentary seat. This win marks the UPND's first-ever representation in Muchinga Province, meaning the ruling party now has members of parliament across all 10 of the country’s provinces.

President Hichilema also congratulated newly elected councillors in Nchelenge and Mponwe constituencies, where the UPND similarly claimed victories in what appeared to be a clean sweep across the three contested seats.

The President used the victories to call for national unity, urging winners to view their political opponents as "fellow citizens, brothers and sisters" rather than enemies. "To the victors, remember that your opponents are not enemies but fellow citizens," he stated, emphasising that democracy thrives when the nation rises "above hate and division."
