PAC to Unveil Dolika as Presidential Candidate
The People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) is set to unveil Dolika Banda as its presidential candidate in the 2026 general election at its convention scheduled for September 4.
Banda, who is former late President Rupiah Banda’s niece, recently announced her intention to run for presidency in next year’s general election. While her family name is familiar, she herself has had little visibility in Zambia’s political space, and questions remain about whether she has the experience or grassroots support to mount a credible campaign.
Meanwhile, PAC president Andyford Banda says that while his party remains open to collaborating with other opposition parties, it will not barter principle for convenience.
In a statement, 27 August 2025, Andyford stated there was a call for leadership that was sober in judgement, resolute in character, and unwavering in its devotion to the rule of law and the dignity of its citizens.
“In the course of recent months, the People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) has undertaken a solemn and far-reaching engagement with patriotic citizens and fellow opposition parties. These consultations have been guided not by expediency, but by principle-by a steadfast determination to chart a course worthy of Zambia’s enduring promise. This has been no ordinary undertaking. It has required of us a rigorous self-examination, a reawakening of purpose, and a recommitment to the ideals that first called us to public service. We have not sought comfort, nor popularity, but truth-and the greater good of our Republic,” he stated.
Andyford further announced the PAC would hold a convention on September 4, as they prepared for the 2026 general election. He said the convention would herald a new chapter in Zambia’s story.
“Any alliance must be built not on fleeting interests, but on shared values, mutual respect, and an unshakable commitment to placing the people above politics. In pursuit of this vision, PAC has conducted nationwide consultations with community leaders, civil society, and political stakeholders. These engagements have culminated in a decision of great importance: the convening of our second national convention,” Andyford stated.
However, much of the focus will inevitably fall on Dolika Banda, whose entry into the presidential race has generated uncertainty. With less than a year before the general election, time is running short for her to establish recognition and demonstrate leadership credentials.
While PAC hopes the convention will energise its base, the decisive factor will be whether Banda can convince the electorate that she represents a viable alternative. At present, significant doubts remain about her ability to achieve that.
