Fuel Supplies Adequate – Government

The Government has rejected claims of a national fuel shortage, reporting that national diesel stocks are adequate to meet current demand.

In a statement, the Ministry of Energy said diesel stocks currently stand at over 64 million litres – equivalent to 14 days of national consumption.

A survey of 650 filling stations showed that 70% are currently dispensing both diesel and petrol.

A small minority, just over 5%, have temporarily run out of both fuels. A further 24% are not currently dispensing one of either petrol or diesel.

Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote says investigations show the reported shortages are highly localised and linked to supply chain bottlenecks.

The Ministry, along with the Energy Regulation Board, says it is increasing spot checks of fuel levels and ensuring the timely import of fuel via the TAZAMA Open Access program.
