Chief Chipepo Enthusiastic About Constitutional Reform and Endorses HH

Chief Chipepo of the Tonga People in Chirundu District, Southern Province is the latest in a long line of traditional leaders to throw his support behind the government’s constitutional initiatives.

The Chief spoke to ZNBC News at his residence on Monday, which was International Nurses Day. The press was covering a reception he held with healthcare professionals in advance of Southern Province’s commemoration event for the day.

The conversation turned to the constitutional reforms that the UPND government is currently pursuing, which principally concern constituency delimitation and introducing certain representation quotas for the National Assembly.

Chief Chipepo expressed his view that it is imperative that the constituency map is redrawn, thus increasing the number of constituencies allowing for better and more localised representation.

“They need to put more constituencies”, the Chief said, echoing the government’s view that doing so will make the National Assembly more representative while also augmenting development through the greater dispersion of Constituency Development Funds.

Furthermore, Chief Chipepo gave President Hichilema his unequivocal endorsement for next year’s presidential election. He cited the success of several development projects, as well as the dire state of the opposition, as his reasons.

“There is no serious opposition”, Chief Chipepo lamented.
