Labour Unions Throw Weight Behind Constitution Amendment Bill No. 7

Zambia's major labour federations have declared strong backing for Constitution Amendment Bill No. 7, with the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and the Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia (FFTUZ) leading a coalition in support of the proposed reforms.

Union leaders characterized the legislation as both timely and forward-thinking, arguing it demonstrates Zambia's maturing democratic landscape.

During a State House meeting with President Hakainde Hichilema, ZCTU President Blake Mulala stated that workers nationwide had been widely consulted and uniformly endorsed the Bill. He called on Members of Parliament to fulfill their electoral obligations by backing the legislation, emphasizing that it reflects the wishes of the workers who put them in office.

President Hichilema responded by highlighting the importance of protecting Zambia's tradition of peaceful power transfers and constructive political dialogue. He stressed that differing viewpoints should serve as a unifying rather than divisive force for national development.
