Zambian Opposition Forms United Front with Presidential Candidate Due in Two Weeks

Socialist Party leader Dr Fred M'membe has revealed that the United Front, a coalition of opposition parties, will announce its presidential candidate within two weeks.

The alliance brings together the Socialist Party, Patriotic Front (PF), Tonse, UNIP, UKA, and several other political organisations seeking to challenge the current government in next year's elections. Dr M'membe confirmed that representatives from member parties are currently finalising key documents and a comprehensive programme outlining their vision for Zambia's future.

Speaking on Prime TV's Oxygen of Democracy, Dr M'membe emphasised the importance of collective leadership within the coalition. He stressed that all participating leaders must be willing to follow others, not just lead. "You can't aspire to lead others when you are not ready to be led by others," he stated.

The United Front includes numerous parties beyond the major players, with the United Liberal Party, Zambia We Want, Heritage Party, Golden Party, and a Copperbelt-based party founded by Howard Kunda among the participants. Dr M'membe noted that UKA members, including State Counsel Sakwiba Sikota and Chishala Kateka, continue their involvement.

Addressing concerns about PF's internal challenges, Dr M'membe maintained that such problems are normal and don't diminish the party's grassroots support. He clarified that the coalition will select the candidate most suitable for winning the election, acknowledging this person may not necessarily be the strongest leader in every aspect but must be positioned to unite voters and secure victory.
