Over 20 Patriotic Front (PF) MPs Call on Former President Edgar Lungu to Retire
The MPs in question have appealed to former president Edgar Lungu to retire from active politics following the Constitutional Court ruling on Wednesday, 11 December, declaring him ineligible to contest future presidential elections, having served two terms as President.
10 MPs held a press briefing yesterday, including Kantanshi MP Anthony Mumba, Msanzala MP Elias Daka, Chadiza MP Jonathan Daka, Kasama Central MP Sibongile Mwamba, Chasefu MP Misheck Nyambose, Chama South MP Davison Mung’andu, Lubansenshi MP Taulo Chewe, Vubwi MP Ackleo Banda, Chipangali MP Andrew Lubusha and Kapoche MP Luckson Lungu.
PF Kantanshi MP and Opposition Whip Anthony Mumba spoke on behalf of the group and said the party parliamentarians acknowledged the court ruling.
Mumba added, “We recognise that this ruling aligns with the con of Zambia and reflects our nation's commitment to upholding good governance; the judgement is a testament to Zambian people’s desire to limit the terms an individual can hold the highest office in the land.”
“In light of this court ruling, we respectfully appeal to President Lungu to finally retire from active politics and assume his rightful role as a true statesman and to support his brother, President HH”, the Kantashi MP continued.
Mr Mumba concluded that the MPs believed the former president was a law-abiding citizen and thanked him for his service to the country. He said the PF must now focus on reorganisation and strengthening its leadership to remain a viable political force.
