Zambia is at the “cusp of change" - Commonwealth

Commonwealth secretary general Patricia Scotland has described the country as being at the “cusp of change” during her visit for the State funeral of the late Kenneth Kaunda.

Speaking at the funeral, Scotland described Dr Kaunda as a global leader, a humanist as well as being the “wave of oppression.”

She went on to describe how the First President of Zambia worked to forge consensus both between and within nations.

“No doubt, he was home to almost all liberation movements in southern Africa. KK set Zambia at the forefront of multilateralism with the vision that was under-guarded by a firm philosophy that pursued quality and the freedom of all people.”

Ms Scotland continued by looking at the state which the country currently finds itself in. It is here where she describes Zambia at “at the cusp of change.”

After being governed by the Patriotic Front for 10 years, a period which has seen the country experience increased cost of living, mismanaged mounting debt and severe corruption, the general election which will occur in less than 40 days time is seen by Ms Scotland as the perfect opportunity for important change within the country.
