Mulungushi Textiles Is Electoral Red Herring - HH

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema says the proposed reopening of Mulungushi Textiles is a political red herring used to distract the people of Kabwe. According to HH, the PF government in fact has no capacity to open the company in any functional way.

Mr Hichilema says there had been several interested investors which the PF had courted for the ailing textiles company, but none had yet lived up to their commitment.

“There is a reason for this and also a reason why it was closed in the first place,” he said.

The opposition leader says that the proposed reopening is a political gambit to swing the people of Kabwe in favour of the PF government in time for next year’s elections.

He added that no one had really analysed whether Mulungushi’s business model was viable under current market conditions.

He has called on the PF to be honest about the company’s viability and publish detailed analysis about capital requirements and other business fundamentals that are essential to making the company profitable and sustainable.

Mr Hichilema said that only once this was done could the government make decisions about recapitalisation management or altering its business model.

He promised that his party, the UPND, would properly fix Mulungushi Textiles once in government.
