Education Minister Fired Amid Sex Scandal

President Lungu has fired General Education Minister David Mabumba after footage emerged depicting the minister touching himself in a sexual manner during a video call with an unidentified woman.

The president has dismissed Mr Mabumba with immediate effect and replaced him with Minister of Water Development Dennis Wanchinga. 

In a statement issued by the president’s special assistant, Isaac Chipampe, President Lungu thanked Mr Mabumba for his service and congratulated Mr Wachinga on his appointment.

The video of Mr Mabumba touching himself has circulated widely on social media, prompting outrage from many Zambians. 

UPND Deputy Secretary Patrick Mucheleka said the video amounted to “one of the lowest moments in our country’s history” and was another sign that “the entire PF government … is morally bankrupt and must all resign immediately”. 

The social media storm prompted some news outlets to erroneously report that Mr Mabumba had killed himself, however this has been denied by his family.

Police are now investigating the video and have urged the public to stop circulating it online.
