Nkandu Luo Disappointed in Sewage Work Construction

Professor Nkandu Luo, MP for Munali, has expressed her disappointment in the contractors working on a new sewage network in Kaunda Square within her constituency.

Professor Luo has visited the site which is undergoing Stage 1 construction after local residents had complained to the local authority of unsafe conditions for residents. On a site visit, she found there were no safety signs to indicate the danger to passers-by, and the construction was happening on the doorsteps of residents with little or no concern for local families’ safety.

Professor Luo was particularly shocked to see the contractors’ lack of concern and lack of provisions made for local children who currently are at risk from falling into sewage ditches.

The Kaunda Square project is being organised by the Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company, and is jointly funded by the Zambian government and the African Development Bank.

Professor Luo’s criticism comes with a reputable scientific eye, as she is an expert in the potential diseases that can be caused from unsanitary living conditions. She has a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Brunei Darussalam, and has served as Head of Pathology and Microbiology at the University Teaching Hospital, Lusaka, Zambia.

Professor Luo currently holds the joint position of Minister of Higher Education and Minister for Livestock and Fisheries. In her capacity of a minister of state, Professor Luo said that the contractors should be a given an ultimatum on their continuing service dependent on them following the pre-issued guidelines.
