DRC’s New President Grants Kabila Immunity
In a move that many were anticipating, the newly elected President Tshisekedi of the DRC has granted his predecessor immunity from prosecution for any of his alleged crimes during his 18 years of rule.
In the same deal, amendments were made to the constitution that will result in future presidents being elected through parliament.
Kenya, Tanzania and Egypt have backed the deal; however South Africa has asked for better details on the agreement and clear indications of the ramifications for DRC’s citizens.
A source has claimed that this agreement is evidence that Kabila plans to come back but securing a deal of immunity and amending the constitution, so presidents are elected through parliament not ballot, it leaves the door open for him.
