Public Advised to Take Precautions Ahead of Strong Winds

The Zambia Meteorological Department has urged members of the public to prepare for a spell of strong winds and colder weather expected to affect much of the country between 28 July and 3 August 2026.

In a moderate weather warning issued ahead of the forecast conditions, the department said a strong high-pressure system positioned off the south-eastern coast of South Africa is expected to drive cool, moist air into Zambia. This weather pattern is likely to bring strong winds, a noticeable drop in temperatures and widespread dusty conditions.

The warning, which remains in force from 24 July until 3 August, cautions that blowing dust may significantly reduce visibility in exposed areas, creating potentially hazardous travelling conditions.

Forecasters also expect cooler temperatures across most parts of the country, with cloudy skies likely over sections of Muchinga, Eastern, Central, Lusaka and Southern provinces.

The department warned that strong wind gusts around lakes and other water bodies could create dangerous conditions for boats and outdoor activities.

Operators of water transport services, as well as those using lakes and rivers, have been advised to suspend operations where possible or exercise extreme caution throughout the warning period.

The public has also been encouraged to keep warm, particularly older people, young children and individuals living with respiratory conditions. Residents are further advised to avoid prolonged exposure to dusty open areas, as airborne dust could aggravate breathing difficulties.

Farmers have been urged to safeguard vulnerable crops and secure loose farm structures and equipment to minimise the risk of damage from the anticipated strong winds and colder weather.

The warning covers most parts of Zambia, with the strongest winds and increased cloud cover expected across parts of Eastern Province extending towards Lusaka and neighbouring areas.

The Zambia Meteorological Department has advised the public to continue monitoring official weather updates and follow all recommended safety measures until the warning expires on 3 August.
