Government to Recruit 2,000 Teachers in 2025 Intake

The Government will today publish advertisements in print and digital media inviting applications for the recruitment of 2,000 teachers for the 2025 intake.

Education Minister Douglas Syakalima confirmed that the Teaching Service Commission will manage the application process, which closes on Monday, 28 April 2026. Speaking to the media, Mr Syakalima said recruitment would be finalised by the end of May, with successful candidates placed on the payroll by August 2026.

He added that the 2026 exercise for a further 3,500 teachers will begin as soon as the 2025 process concludes. Government is also planning a significantly larger drive in 2027, targeting the recruitment of between 30,000 and 40,000 new teachers to meet long-term demand.

Mr Syakalima explained that sustained recruitment is essential following the introduction of free education, which has driven a sharp rise in enrolment across the country. Expanding the teaching workforce, he said, is central to meeting rising demand and maintaining classroom standards.

Teaching Service Commission Chairperson Daphne Chimuka said the advertisement will also serve to build a new national database of teacher applicants, strengthening workforce planning for future intakes across the sector.

Ms Chimuka acknowledged that more experienced graduates may hold an advantage, but stressed that the process remains open and competitive, with all qualified candidates considered on merit.

She urged applicants to update their credentials on the Teaching Council of Zambia portal ahead of submission to avoid being disadvantaged. Applications will be accepted both online and in hard copy through ZAMPOST offices nationwide ahead of the 28 April deadline.
