Seed Global Health Equips Lusaka Maternity Wards in Push to Cut Maternal Deaths
Three of Lusaka's busiest hospitals have received a significant boost to their maternity services, after Seed Global Health donated essential labour and delivery ward equipment valued at over K1.2 million.
Chawama, Kanyama and Matero — all Level One hospitals serving high-density communities — are the beneficiaries of the donation, which aims to create safer, better-equipped environments for mothers giving birth.
Health Minister Alex Katakwe, who received the equipment on behalf of Government, said maternal and newborn health remains a central priority. "Measures have been put in place to ensure that no mother dies during childbirth," he said, describing the donation as consistent with Government's broader efforts to improve health service delivery across the country.
Seed Global Health Country Director Chikusela Sikazwe signalled that this is only the beginning. The organisation plans to extend similar support to four additional Level One facilities in the coming months, as part of a sustained commitment to strengthening Zambia's primary health infrastructure.
Dr. Sikazwe also highlighted the importance of investing in the people behind the equipment, noting that training health workers is as critical to improving outcomes as the resources they work with.
Angela Mwaba, Head of Lusaka College of Nursing and Midwifery, welcomed the donation, saying it would directly support the development of competent midwives — the frontline practitioners on whom safe deliveries ultimately depend.
The contribution comes as Zambia continues to work towards reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths nationwide.
