ZICTA Brings Enhanced Connectivity to Eastern Province with 49 New Communication Towers
The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has taken a significant step toward bridging the digital divide with the construction of 49 communication towers across Eastern Province.
Technology and Science Minister Felix Mutati said the project reflects the Government's commitment to closing communication gaps and ensuring that all Zambians have access to reliable network coverage. He emphasised that expanding tower infrastructure is central to promoting digital inclusion, particularly in underserved communities that have long struggled with poor or non-existent connectivity.
Minister Mutati made the remarks while commissioning a solar-powered communication tower in the Katiula area of Katete District, highlighting the Government's investment in sustainable technology solutions for rural areas.
ZICTA's Director of Engineering and Technical Services, Elliot Kabalo, confirmed that the 49 towers were completed last year and are distributed across the province. He announced that the Authority has set an ambitious target of constructing an additional 80 towers nationwide in 2026, signalling a continued push to expand coverage to more remote parts of the country.
MTN Network Quality Manager Patience Banda expressed the company's strong commitment to universal access and rural connectivity, noting that strategic use of technology in rural areas unlocks a wide range of solutions for communities previously cut off from digital services.
Local resident Peter Phiri welcomed the development, praising President Hakainde Hichilema for championing infrastructure projects that are making a tangible difference in people's daily lives across Eastern Province.
