Ministry of Education and UNESCO Launch WhatsApp Learning Platform
The Ministry of Education has partnered with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to launch a new WhatsApp-based digital learning platform, the Online Learning Platform in Zambia (Ola-ZED).
The initiative is part of the Government’s wider drive to improve learning outcomes and equip learners with the skills needed for an increasingly digital world. It also reflects the Grow Zambia agenda, which places investment in people and skills at the centre of national development. By using WhatsApp, the platform makes learning available to pupils on a familiar tool.
Speaking at the launch at Munali Boys Secondary School in Lusaka, Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary for Administration Noriana Muneku said Ola-ZED will help tackle long-standing challenges in the education sector, including overcrowded classrooms, limited learning materials and unequal access to educational resources. Her remarks were delivered on her behalf by Assistant Director for Digital Infrastructure Francis Hachoombwa.
Ms Muneku also announced that the Ministry has received 5,000 tablets from the Zambia Statistics Agency (ZAMSTATS). The devices will be distributed across all provinces in the first quarter of 2027, further expanding learners’ access to digital tools.
UNESCO Team Leader Alice Saili said the platform will give learners access to reliable information that supports digital literacy, personal development and informed decision-making.
The launch of Ola-ZED marks another step in the Government’s efforts to modernise education under the Grow Zambia agenda, ensuring that every learner, regardless of location, can benefit from quality learning resources and help grow Zambia’s future.
