Zambian Peacekeeper Dies While Serving UN Mission in Central African Republic
The Zambian government has announced the death of Staff Sergeant Alick Banda of the Zambia Army, who died while deployed with the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
The announcement was made by government officials who expressed profound sorrow at the loss of the serviceman. Staff Sergeant Banda's remains are expected to arrive in Zambia at 20:00 hours today ahead of burial arrangements.
"Staff Sergeant Banda made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the cause of peace," officials stated. "His dedication to duty reflected the highest traditions of the Zambia Defence Force and brought honour to our nation."
The government has informed the next of kin of the deceased soldier.
In extending condolences to Staff Sergeant Banda's family, officials acknowledged the sacrifice made by Zambian peacekeepers serving internationally. "Your grief is our grief. Your loss is felt in every corner of this land," the statement read.
"Staff Sergeant Banda's service reminds us of the courage and commitment of all Zambian men and women who wear the uniform in pursuit of peace, both at home and abroad."
MINUSCA was established by the UN Security Council in 2014 to protect civilians and support the transition process in the Central African Republic, which has faced ongoing conflict and instability. Zambia has been a consistent contributor to UN peacekeeping operations across Africa.
The circumstances surrounding Staff Sergeant Banda's death have not been disclosed. The Zambia Defence Force is expected to provide full military honours at his burial.
