Zambia to Commission Largest Solar Power Plant as Part of Energy Diversification Drive
Zambia’s largest solar power plant is set to be officially commissioned tomorrow by President Hakainde Hichilema. The $100 million Chisamba Solar Power Plant, with a capacity of 100 megawatts, marks a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing energy diversification strategy.
ZESCO spokesperson Matongo Maumbi described the plant as a landmark project and the first of its scale in Zambia, setting a benchmark for future solar developments. The facility is expected to contribute substantially to President Hichilema’s target of generating 1,000 megawatts of solar power by the end of 2025. Maumbi also confirmed that Phase 2 of the project is scheduled to begin shortly.
ZESCO is working closely with private sector partners to initiate additional solar projects across the country in support of the 1,000-megawatt target.
Chisamba Solar Power Plant Manager, Chiz Nyirenda, noted the project’s positive impact on local employment. During the construction phase, approximately 1,300 jobs were created - 98% of which were filled by workers from surrounding communities. With the plant now operational, it will provide ongoing employment for around 100 people, including 40 directly and 60 indirectly.
The commissioning of the Chisamba Solar Power Plant underscores Zambia’s commitment to diversifying its energy mix. Beyond improving national energy security, the project also aims to boost local economies by creating jobs and generating income for communities.
