Zambia Pushes for Greater Air Connectivity Across Africa
Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali has called for a renewed focus on improving intra-African air travel as a key driver of economic growth and regional integration. Speaking at the official opening of the Aviation Week Africa Conference in Livingstone, Tayali stressed that better air connectivity is vital to building a more unified and globally competitive Africa.
Tayali emphasised that a more connected Africa will boost the economy, strengthen development, and enhance the tourism sectors. “We must renew our commitment to key initiatives by liberalising our airspace. This will attract new carriers, increase competition, reduce airfares, and ultimately make air travel more accessible for all Africans,” Tayali said.
Tayali’s remarks underline Zambia’s commitment to advancing the African Union’s Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), which aims to promote seamless air travel across the continent.
Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba also spoke at the event, highlighting that the Zambian government is making tangible progress in opening Africa to Africans. He explained that President Hakainde Hichilema has tasked the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Tourism, and Transport and Logistics with facilitating intra-African mobility — including exploring visa waivers to encourage cross-border travel.
Together, these steps signal Zambia’s determination to play a leading role in forging a more connected, mobile, and prosperous Africa — where movement between nations is easier and more affordable for all citizens.
