Govt Releases K2 Million For Flood and Hunger Relief

The government has made K2 million available for hunger relief and repairing damages in parts of the country affected by flooding.

Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) National Coordinator Chanda Kabwe made the announcement on Monday during a visit to Western Province.

Mr Kabwe said the government would also provide 3,200 bags of mealie meal and 600 bags of beans for affected communities, including Lukuku, Mitete, Nalolo, Mongu, Kaoma and Sikongo districts.

He praised the people of Western Province for their patience and assured them that the government would do everything possible to support families whose lives had been ruined by the floods.

Permanent Secretary for Western Province Daniel Bukali has thanked the government for their timely response but called on the DMMU to do more to increase food relief to people in the region.

Meanwhile, the Zambia-China Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone has donated 3,000 10kg bags of mealie meal to flood victims in Mungwi district, Northern Province.

The company’s vice-president Liao Zibin said they would continue to supplement government relief efforts as part of their commitment to corporate social responsibility.

The Minister of Commerce and Trade Christopher Yaluma expressed his gratitude for the donation and encouraged other companies to follow suit.

Widespread flooding has so far reached 40 districts across Zambia, affecting an estimated 1.3 million people.
