President Hichilema files nomination for second term
President Hakainde Hichilema today filed his nomination papers as the UPND candidate for the 13 August general election, formally launching his bid for a second term in office.
The President arrived at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre this afternoon, accompanied by First Lady Mutinta Hichilema, Vice President Mutale Nalumango, senior party officials, alliance partners, and thousands of supporters. Mrs Nalumango was unveiled as his running mate.
Electoral Commission of Zambia Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis declared both nominations valid, confirming the ticket had satisfied all constitutional requirements. President Hichilema joins thirteen other aspirants, including one female candidate, in what is shaping up to be a competitive presidential contest.
Speaking after filing, the President said his campaign would be anchored on the performance of his administration. "Our basis of convincing the people is on delivery and performance in the first term," he said. "So far, we have done the heavy lifting. What is left is to accelerate economic growth, create jobs for the youthful population, and provide business opportunities for all across the country without exception."
He cited the restructuring of 94 per cent of the country's debt, foreign reserves above $6.5 billion, the stabilisation of the kwacha, more than $11 billion in mining investment, the return of over 2.5 million children to school under free education, and the expansion of the Constituency Development Fund.
The President also issued a clear warning on electoral violence, telling supporters that Zambia's peace and unity must not be sacrificed for political interests. He congratulated other candidates who had successfully filed and wished those who had not better luck next time.
