Siame Meets UK and China on Climate Investment and Trade

Zambia is looking to deepen its partnership with the United Kingdom to speed up investment, strengthen climate action and deliver sustainable growth under the Grow Zambia Agenda.

Green Economy and Environment Minister Dr Gilbert Siame said his ministry is focused on turning policy commitments into action, through partnerships that can unlock investment and increase development impact.

He was speaking in Lusaka today when British High Commissioner Rebecca Terzeon paid him a courtesy call.

Ms Terzeon said the United Kingdom is committed to strengthening its economic partnership with Zambia. She said the UK will support the country in consolidating the gains made through economic reforms over the past five years.

Dr Siame also received a Chinese delegation led by Ambassador Han Jing. He stressed the need to attract investment in climate initiatives, including technology transfer to strengthen Zambia's early warning systems.

Mr Han said the Chinese Government is ready to support the Grow Zambia Agenda, including by helping Zambian products such as wheat and soya beans reach the Chinese market.

The two meetings show Zambia building partnerships with major economies on several fronts at once: climate finance, economic reform and trade. For Zambian farmers, access to the Chinese market could open a large new outlet for their produce. Climate investment and better early warning systems would help communities prepare for droughts and floods.

Together, the engagements point to a government using its international partnerships to back the shift from economic stabilisation towards growth.
