KCM Targets 300,000 Tonnes of Copper in Three Years

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) PLC has set an ambitious target of producing 300,000 tonnes of copper annually within the next three years, as the mine ramps up operations under Vedanta Resources.

KCM Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Mewett said there were encouraging signs that the mine's production capacity was steadily increasing following the resumption of operations by Vedanta. Speaking in an interview with ZNBC News in Chililabombwe, Mr Mewett said the mine's output of 10,000 metric tonnes of copper in July was a clear indication that the three-year target is well within reach.

He explained that the recent performance reflected the progress being made in stabilising and expanding operations, and expressed confidence that production would continue to climb as investment and development at the mine gathered pace.

Mr Mewett noted that KCM is expected to play a significant role in supporting Zambia's national ambition of producing three million metric tonnes of copper annually by 2031. As one of the country's most important copper assets, the mine's recovery is seen as central to that wider goal.

He added that the renewed momentum at KCM would not only boost national output but also create jobs, strengthen the local economy and restore confidence in one of Zambia's flagship mining operations.

The Copperbelt-based mine has long been regarded as a cornerstone of Zambia's mining sector, and its return to growth is expected to contribute meaningfully to the country's broader economic transformation agenda.
