Chikankata Road Upgrade Reaches 35% Completion

Construction works to upgrade the Chikankata Road in Southern Province to bituminous standard have reached 35% completion, according to the Road Development Agency (RDA).

RDA Southern Province Roads Engineer Namalala Chilala said the K360 million project commenced in September 2025 and is on course for completion in February 2027.

Engineer Chilala said that despite a number of implementation challenges, the Agency remains confident that the project will be completed within the scheduled timeframe.

He explained that earthworks have so far been completed on approximately 20 kilometres of the 35-kilometre road, marking significant progress on the project.

He also assured the public that all construction materials being used meet the required quality standards, adding that the upgraded road is being built to provide a durable transport network that will deliver long-term value for money for the Government.

Meanwhile, RDA Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager Anthony Mulowa said the Agency considers the Chikankata Road a strategic infrastructure project because of its significant contribution to the economic development of Southern Province.

Site Manager Wu Ziyi revealed that the project has so far created employment opportunities for 120 local residents, providing a boost to livelihoods in the surrounding communities.
