Government Commissions ERB 197KW Solar System

The government has formally inaugurated the Energy Regulation Board's (ERB) 197KW solar power system, reaffirming its drive to expand sustainable energy use across the public sector.

Permanent Secretary in charge of electricity at the Ministry of Energy, Arnold Simwaba, said the government appreciates the importance of adopting forward-thinking and environmentally responsible energy solutions that support the country's broader development goals.

Addressing the gathering at the launch in Lusaka, Mr Simwaba emphasised that alternative energy sources deserve greater recognition, especially as the sector enters a period of change shaped by the need to bolster energy security, raise efficiency and combat the impact of climate change.

He noted that the project represents a central element of a presidential programme created to speed up the move towards renewable energy throughout public institutions. According to Mr Simwaba, the programme aims to tap into the nation's plentiful solar potential to supply electricity to public bodies, ease reliance on traditional power sources, and secure lasting sustainability in the delivery of services.

For his part, ERB Board Chairperson James Banda hailed the solar power system as a landmark accomplishment for the institution and a meaningful stride towards a cleaner energy future.

Mr Banda stressed that the event was not merely the commissioning of a solar installation, but a clear demonstration of ERB's commitment to energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. He added that the ERB's mandate extends beyond regulating the sector to leading by example, as reflected in the newly commissioned solar system.
