Smart Zambia and Huawei Sign MoU on National AI Data Centre and 5,000-Strong ICT Training Drive

Smart Zambia and Huawei Technologies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support co-investment in a National Artificial Intelligence Data Centre and train 5,000 Zambian ICT professionals by 2028 through Huawei's Global Academy.

The agreement, unveiled at the 2026 Zambia Mobile Congress in Lusaka, marks one of the most significant digital partnerships of the New Dawn era and is expected to accelerate the rollout of AI-powered public services across all 25 Government ministries.

Vice President Mutale Nalumango said Zambia is determined to take a leading role in the global digital revolution, with Government choosing to position the country as a smart, connected and competitive nation capable of driving innovation, economic growth and inclusive development through technology.

Smart Zambia National Coordinator Percy Chinyama said Government's investment in digital systems has already saved billions of kwacha, strengthened transparency in public programmes and improved service delivery across agriculture, health, education and finance.

Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Han Jing said China remains committed to supporting Zambia's digital transformation agenda, describing the partnership as a clear signal of confidence in the country's long-term direction.

Huawei Technologies Southern Region Vice President for Network Operations Chen Li said Zambia's Vision 2030 agenda requires strong digital transformation efforts, and that Huawei is ready to play its part.

The Data Centre and training pipeline are expected to anchor Zambia's emerging position as a regional hub for AI, cloud services and digital skills development.
