Solar Projects Strengthen Mining Power Supply

The Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) is working with mining companies to expand investment in alternative energy sources, aiming to deliver a more stable electricity supply for Zambia's mining sector.

CEC Chief Financial Officer Mutale Mukuka said the recently commissioned Itimpi Two Solar Plant represents a significant step towards diversifying the country's energy mix. Speaking to ZNBC News, Mr Mukuka noted that the company remains focused on supporting Zambia's ambition to produce three million tonnes of copper.

He said reaching that target will require close collaboration among stakeholders to meet the 8,000 megawatts of electricity the sector needs. Greater investment in solar energy, he added, would help mining firms sustain productivity through a more reliable power supply.

Zambia Chamber of Mines Chief Executive Officer Sokwani Chilembo welcomed the development, describing alternative energy projects as essential to improving operational stability across the industry. Mr Chilembo said the country has drawn important lessons from the impact of climate change, which has weighed heavily on electricity generation in recent years.

Meanwhile, energy expert Steve Mudenda said consistent policy direction on alternative energy development is beginning to translate into visible infrastructure growth.

The Itimpi Two plant is among a growing pipeline of solar developments expected to ease pressure on Zambia's national grid as mining output continues to expand, supporting both productivity targets and the country's wider energy security objectives.
