Zambia Secures $100 Million Norwegian Facility for Power Producers

Government has secured 100 million US dollars from Norway under a bilateral agreement to support both national and international Independent Power Producers operating in Zambia.

Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary Dr Douty Chibamba confirmed the development in an interview with ZNBC News, urging eligible entities to take advantage of the financing opportunity to expand activity in the energy sector. The facility is expected to bolster generation capacity at a time when the country is working to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on hydropower, which has been affected by recurrent drought.

In a related development, Executive Director of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, Ibrahim Cheikh Diong, said the recently concluded 8th Board Meeting delivered significant progress on adaptation support for Zambia and the wider continent. The gathering marked the first time the Fund's Board has convened on African soil, with Zambia hosting the proceedings.

Mr Diong said the meeting achieved a number of key milestones aimed at advancing climate adaptation initiatives across the region. The Fund, established under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, is designed to assist developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.

Together, the two announcements point to increasing international engagement with Zambia on energy financing and climate resilience, both of which feature prominently in the country's wider development agenda.
