Zambia Signs $250 Million Renewable Energy Deal

Zambia has signed a $250 million power purchase agreement between the Ministry of Energy and DZGN Energy Resources Limited for a landmark hybrid wind and solar project on the Copperbelt.

The project will generate 100 megawatts of electricity dedicated to powering public health facilities across the region, marking a significant step in the government's efforts to strengthen service delivery in the healthcare sector.

Energy Minister Makozo Chikote, who witnessed the signing in Lusaka, said the agreement demonstrates government's commitment to creating a favourable policy environment for private sector investment in energy infrastructure. He credited supportive regulatory reforms for attracting the deal and highlighted the growing role of private capital in developing Zambia's power sector.

In a further sign of progress in the energy sector, Minister Chikote confirmed that approximately 90 percent of the roughly $800 million owed to Oil Marketing Companies has now been settled.

DZGN Country Director Sam Nyirenda announced that the project will introduce wind power technology to Zambia for the first time, positioning the country as an emerging destination for diversified renewable energy investment.

The agreement forms part of the broader New Dawn government's strategy to expand clean energy access and attract transformative private sector partnerships.
