Saudi Partnership Delivers Zambia's First LPG Micro-Filling Station as Hichilema's Riyadh Visit Bears Fruit
President Hakainde Hichilema's 2023 visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is delivering tangible results for Zambia, with strengthened bilateral ties now translating into real benefits for citizens.
Through its Empowering Africa Initiative, the Saudi government partnered with Afrox and Linde Middle East to support Zambia's clean energy transition, resulting in the launch of the country's first Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Micro-Filling Station in Lusaka and the donation of 200 LPG cylinders and stoves to vulnerable households in Kanyama Compound.
Speaking at the launch ceremony at Garden Plaza Mall, Minister of Community Development and Social Services Doreen Mwamba, representing Green Economy and Environment Minister Mike Elton Mposha, hailed the project as a milestone in Zambia's sustainable energy journey.
"This initiative demonstrates the power of international cooperation in delivering local solutions. Through partnerships with Saudi Arabia and the private sector, we are ensuring Zambian households access safe, affordable, and modern cooking solutions," she said.
Mrs Mwamba described the distribution of gas stoves as a "Cash Plus" intervention that complements the Social Cash Transfer Programme, reducing charcoal dependence while addressing climate vulnerabilities. She emphasised that effective social protection cannot be separated from climate action.
Saudi Ambassador Ali Al Kahtani reaffirmed his country's commitment to Zambia's clean energy goals, noting the micro-filling station model promotes safer energy access and creates economic opportunities.
The project aligns with Zambia's national clean cooking strategy and the Eighth National Development Plan, which prioritises environmental sustainability and inclusive growth — demonstrating how President Hichilema's diplomatic engagements are producing measurable outcomes for ordinary Zambians.
