Sinazongwe power project moves forward as 135-tonne transformers arrive

Two 135-tonne transformers bound for a major new power project in Southern Province have arrived in Livingstone, marking an important milestone for one of Zambia’s key energy developments.

The giant units, transported by Ever Great Energy Company Limited, completed a long overland journey from South Africa through Botswana before crossing into Zambia via the Kazungula One Stop Border Post.

Moving equipment of this size by road is no small task. With a combined weight of 270 tonnes, the transformers required careful planning and coordination to travel safely across three countries and through an international border crossing.

From Livingstone, they will continue to their final destination: the 600-megawatt thermal power project in Sinazongwe District. Once installed, the transformers will form a key component of the plant, which is set to play an important role in strengthening Zambia’s electricity generation capacity.

Transformers are central to any power station, converting the electricity a plant produces into a form that can be safely fed into the national grid and delivered efficiently to homes and businesses. Without them, the power generated cannot reach the people who need it.

At 600 megawatts, the Sinazongwe project represents a substantial boost to the country’s generating capacity at a time when reliable electricity is vital for economic growth, industry and households alike.

The arrival of the transformers is a clear sign that work on the project is moving forward, bringing Zambia a step closer to a more secure and dependable energy supply.
