Lusaka Roads Set for Major Upgrade as Government Releases K1.3 Billion

The Zambian Government has announced the release of K1.3 billion for the construction and rehabilitation of 43 kilometres of roads in Lusaka, marking a significant investment in the city’s infrastructure.

Local Government Permanent Secretary Nicholas Phiri confirmed that funds have been disbursed and that works are scheduled to begin this month.

Key roads earmarked for upgrade include the Great East Road, Ben Bella Road, Los Angeles Boulevard, Independence Avenue, and Garden Compound Road. Several smaller roads within the central business district and surrounding townships will also be improved.

One of the most notable projects is the expansion of the Great East Road from four to six lanes, stretching from the Munali traffic circle to the Airport traffic circle. This alone will cost approximately K800 million and is expected to significantly ease congestion along the busy route.

Local residents have welcomed the initiative, seeing the road improvements as a sign of meaningful development within the capital.

The government’s investment is expected to boost Lusaka’s role as a national transport hub, facilitating the faster movement of goods and services while enhancing daily commutes for thousands of citizens.
