MAZ Predicts Drop in Mealie Meal Prices
The Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) has projected a reduction in the price of mealie meal compared to last year, citing improved maize supply prospects for the 2025 season.
In 2024, Zambia experienced a severe drought intensified by El Niño and the broader effects of climate change. The crisis prompted President Hakainde Hichilema to declare a national disaster on 29 February 2024. The drought disrupted agriculture, water supply, and energy production, leaving 6.6 million people in urgent need of assistance.
Speaking to ZNBC News Today, MAZ president Andrew Chintala expressed cautious optimism. “We are anticipating a favourable maize supply compared to the last two seasons, so this season looks quite good,” he said. He added that falling mealie meal prices would help improve affordability and strengthen national food security.
According to MAZ’s assessments, Zambia is on track to produce enough maize not only for domestic consumption but also for export, helping to stabilise regional food supply chains. “It appears we’re almost back to the position where the country produces enough for both local needs and the export market,” Chintala noted.
However, he emphasised that final conclusions depend on the upcoming release of the national food balance sheet and crop forecast survey results.
