Kansanshi Copper Mine Expansion Project Nears Completion

The project to expand the capacity and output of the Kansanshi gold and copper mine near Solwezi, North-Western Province, is 80% complete according to the mine’s assistant general manager Axel Kotten.

Mines and Mineral Development Minister Paul Kabuswe toured the facility earlier this week in order to supervise the project’s progress. The expansion is expected to greatly enhance copper production in the region, strengthening Zambia’s position as a global powerhouse of copper exportation.

Moreover, the project has brought plenty of employment opportunity to the region. It has directly employed 900 locals, and indirectly created a further 300 jobs. This was welcomed by Solwezi Central’s member of parliament, Stafford Mulusa, who also praised the fact that over 140 local contractors have been involved in the project in some capacity.

The S3 expansion project is currently on schedule and is expected to be fully operational before the end of the year. Such developments further the government’s goals to boost export revenue and create employment opportunities across Zambia
