Zambia Powers Ahead: Government Secures Landmark Solar Investment

The Zambian government, has demonstrated strong leadership in the renewable energy sector, partnering with ZAHU Energy Solutions, to launch the construction of a 200-megawatt solar plant in Mumbwa Distirct.

Under the terms of a landmark 25-year power purchase agreement between ZESCO and ZAHU, the solar facility is scheduled for completion within 18 months.

Energy Minister Makozo Chikote, speaking at the ceremony, described the initiative as a significant achievement for Zambians. He noted that recent energy sector reforms have paved the way for exploring alternative energy sources. ZESCO Managing Director Justin Loongo emphasized that integrating solar energy into the national grid will enhance power availability across the country.

ZAHU CEO Ignatius Hangoma highlighted that the project came from collaboration between Zambian and Hungarian companies and it will deliver clean energy, create jobs, and strengthen Zambia’s renewable energy mix.

Mumbwa MP Credo Nanjuwa commended the government’s continued investment in the district, which now exceeds $1 billion. He affirmed that the solar plant will make a significant contribution to Zambia’s energy sector.

This positive development in the energy sector follows on from other news today that the 50-megawatt Mabumba Solar Plant in Mansa, Luapula Province is nearly complete. This will help to end load shedding in Mansa, Chipili, Chifunabuli, Mwense and Samfya.
