Zambia’s Million Tonne Moment

Zambia is projected to reach a significant milestone of one million metric tonnes of copper by December 2025, according to ZCCM-IH Board Chairperson Phesto Musonda.

The Chairperson attributed this impressive growth to the government’s strategic reforms and stabilization efforts. These initiatives have included targeted policies to mitigate the impact of drought on mining operations. Under President Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership, the country has set an ambitious target of achieving 3 million tonnes of copper output by 2031.

Musonda made these remarks during a call with Zambia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Macenje Mazoka. An update was later shared in a statement issued to ZNBC News by First Secretary Press at the Zambian High Commission in London, Speedwell Mupuchi.

The call also revealed encouraging news about investment in Zambia’s mining sector, which has attracted USD 12 billion in commitments. ZCCM-IH is actively working to restore longstanding partnerships and forge new relationships as the country strives to become a major player in copper marketing, a sector previously dominated by foreign agents. Musonda further noted that ZCCM-IH is advancing into gold exploration and mining, while actively exploring opportunities in cobalt and uranium.

High Commissioner Mazoka commended the company’s strategic direction and emphasised how investor confidence has strengthened following Zambia’s successful debt restructuring and the growing international interest in the country’s energy sector.
