ZDA Makes Deal for Fertiliser Plant in Siavonga

The Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) has signed an investment agreement with Blooming Chemical Industry Limited (BCI) for the construction of a fertiliser plant.

The plant will be constructed in the Siavonga district in Southern Province and has an investment value of K21 billion. BCI projects that the plant will produce 520,000 tonnes of urea—the most concentrated solid nitrogen fertiliser—and 300,000 tonnes annually of synthetic ammonia as a byproduct.

Commerce, Trade, and Industry Minister Chipoka Mulenga, speaking at the singing ceremony today in Lusaka, said the construction of the plant will lower the cost of fertiliser in the country.

Agriculture Minister Reuben Mtolo said the country would no longer import fertiliser and instead buy directly from the plant once production begins.

ZDA Vice Board Chairperson Ashwini Sagar described the fertiliser plant as a milestone in the country’s plan to achieve food security. District Commissioner for Siavonga, Geoffrey Jakopo, said the plant will be an economic booster for the district.
