Mia Phiri Wins Bronze at 2024 African Games

Zambian athlete Mia Phiri has won bronze in the 50m backstroke, coming in third with a time of 29.17 seconds. She is the first Zambian to win a medal at the 2024 African Games taking place in Ghana.

The win follows a strong performance by Phiri at the World Championships in Doha last month when she recorded a time of 29.61s, up from her previous personal best and Zambian Open National Record of 30.17s.

The 2024 African Games kicked off on March 8th and will run until March 23rd. The games are taking place in Ghana, with events spread across the cities of Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast. They were originally scheduled for August 2023, but delayed due to economic pressures and disagreements between African sporting federations and the AU.

With 52 nations competing, the pan-African sporting event also serves as a qualifying round for the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics and is held once every four years.
