Police Arrest Man Impersonating A Doctor At Chawama Hospital

Earlier this week,  the Kabwata police successfully captured an individual who was impersonating a medical doctor and orchestrating a fraudulent scheme at Chawama Hospital.

The apprehended suspect, identified as Dr. John Mulenga, was taken into custody on November 24, 2023, at East Park Mall, and is currently being held pending a court appearance.

The arrest stems from a report filed by Irene Njovu, a 25-year-old resident of an unmarked house in Chilenje, who fell victim to the impersonation.

Njovu reported the fraudulent activity after encountering gynecological complications and being directed to the suspect by her husband, 29-year-old Joseph Mwale.

According to the filed report, the imposter, claiming to be Dr. John Mulenga associated with an undisclosed residence in Chipata Compound, persuaded Njovu to schedule a medical procedure at Chawama Hospital, purportedly set for November 24, 2023.

Prior to the planned operation, the suspect collected K650 from Njovu under the guise of covering medical expenses.

However, suspicions arose just before the operation, leading to the revelation that the alleged medical practitioner was a fake lacking legitimate medical qualifications.

Promptly alerted to the situation, the police swiftly apprehended the suspect at East Park Mall around 18:30 hours on the same day.

Rae Hamoonga, the Police Public Relations Officer, underscored law enforcement's dedication to ensuring public safety and urged citizens to stay vigilant, promptly reporting any suspicious activities to the police.

This incident serves as a stark reminder for individuals to verify the credentials of healthcare professionals and exclusively seek medical services from recognised and authorised institutions to safeguard their health and overall well-being.
