Opposition Considers Boycott of Hichilema’s Inaugural Opening of Parley
Matero Patriotic Front (PF) MP Miles Sampa says opposition MPs are considering boycotting President Hakainde Hichilema’s official opening of Parliament, scheduled for 12 September 2025. The event will mark the inaugural sitting of the Fifth Session of the Thirteenth National Assembly.
In an interview, Sampa argued that the President’s speeches lack substance and follow-through.
“The President says he is pro-women empowerment and pro-justice, but from one speech to another the reality is the opposite. These speeches are not coupled with action,” he said.
Sampa stressed that discussions are underway within the PF about how to respond, noting that opposition MPs are consulting with their central committee and party leadership.
“We don’t operate in isolation. We are in talks with our central committee and the top leadership of the party,” he explained.
He further alleged that opposition voices are being silenced in Parliament, claiming MPs are removed when attempting to express alternative views. According to Sampa, this undermines Zambia’s democratic traditions and could erode international confidence.
“Stakeholders will not want to continue funding a process that is not transparent, that is unfair, and that prevents the PF from participating,” he warned.
