Following the continued protest and discontent on the streets of Lusaka as Zambia’s economy continues to freefall, President Lungu is under unprecedented pressure.
Sources close to the President have confirmed that he believes the arrest of the UPND President, Hakainde Hichilema, will deflect the world’s attention away from his economic troubles and discontent towards his leadership by the people of Zambia.
Earlier in 2017 HH was arrested and incarcerated for four months after his motorcade failed to stop for the President.
The arrest caused global condemnation and protest by world leaders, and was a major embarrassment for President Lungu.
Should such an arrest on HH be repeated, it is likely to lead to Zambia facing severe action being taken against the President by the international community. This is likely to come in the form of aid restrictions on Zambia, something the country can ill afford.
