#22 on Open Zambia’s top Zambians of 2017 is Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu.
Archbishop Telesphore Mpundu, the Archbishop of Lusaka is arguably the most recognizable figure in the Zambian Catholic community as President of the Zambian Catholic Conference of Bishops. Outspoken and brave, he has held the government to account frequently. This year he put his head above the parapet, begging to see a reversal in the creeping dictatorship in our Nation. Naturally the government attacked him, however he held steadfast, and did not withdraw his statement. The Archbishop bravely discussed the limitations imposed by the current administration on what was once the jewel of democratic practice in Southern Africa, additionally speaking against what he saw as police brutality in breaking political dissidence.
His love and devotion to God is obvious and his service has been selfless and integral to not only the development of Zambian democracy but also to the strengthening of the Christian spirit of our nation. Thank you Archbishop, you make Zambia a better place and we at Open Zambia are more than grateful.
