Zambia bids to host 2021 AFCON

Zambia is seeking to host the 2021 senior Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), says Ponga Liwewe.

Liwewe, the Football Association of Zambia general secretary, stated yesterday that the move was aimed at cushioning the pullout of hosting the 2019 Africa Cup.
He stated that Zambia still stands a good chance to host the continental tournaments.

“FAZ wishes to inform all stakeholders and the public that despite withdrawing from hosting the 2019 Africa Cup edition, the country still stands on firm ground to host future Africa Cup tournaments,” Liwewe stated.

FAZ together with its major stakeholder, the Zambian government will consider bidding for the 2021 senior Africa Cup of Nations.

He further stated that the move to increase the number of participating countries in the Africa Cup by CAF had motivated FAZ.

“The Association is further encouraged by CAF’s decision to increase the Africa Cup participating countries from 16 to 24 teams,” stated Liwewe.

FAZ last week announced that they had pulled down the bid to host the 2019 Under 23 Africa Cup because the government did not have enough money to fund the venture.
